Coaching is an art that
comes from appreciating the nuances of the human experience. Keys to effective coaching include: intentionality, humility,
patience, empathy, compassion, sensitivity, and humour.
There are numerous psychological approaches used by coaches. Each approach provides a unique vista of the human experience. Take for instance, the four established theories in psychology: Psychodynamic, Cognitive, Behavioural, and Humanistic. Time being a continuum, the Psychodynamic theory represents the past, the Cognitive and Behavioural theories reflect the immediate (the present), and the future (the potential) is captured by the Humanistic theory. Individually, each theory only provides a fragmented snapshot of an individual’s thought processes and life experiences. However, when understood as being interwoven, a complete representation of the human experience results and the essence of the individual is unveiled.
