The School of Life

There are clear distinctions between knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. “Knowledge” is the acquisition of information. For instance, one may acquire knowledge from reading a textbook. In contrast, “understanding” is the extension of this acquired information; application of this knowledge to a everyday life. Moreover, it is through reflection, analysis, and the reapplication of this newfound understanding that leads to “wisdom”. Wisdom is the ability to learn and to teach through the use of logical deduction & induction, analogies, metaphors, anecdotes, and storytelling.

The discrepancy between knowledge and understanding is what I term “artificial (surface) learning”, which is symbolized by context-specific learning. In contrast, the path that leads from understanding to wisdom, which I term “true (deep) learning”, entails the synthesis of learning across different domains. InVivo Learning academic guidance seeks the attainment of the latter.
